Short answer: a lead magnet earns an email when it removes work the buyer was already going to do. A template, a calculator, a real price benchmark or a filled-in example beats another introductory guide every time.
The test before you build it
Ask one question: would this person pay a small amount for it, or spend two hours making it themselves? If neither, it is content, not a lead magnet, and it should be published openly to earn search traffic instead.
- A checklist they will actually run this week.
- A template that saves a first draft.
- A benchmark with real numbers from your own work.
- A calculator that turns their inputs into a decision.
Gate the right thing
Gating an article costs you the search traffic and the AI citations it would have earned. Publish the thinking openly and gate the tool.
That way the page ranks, gets quoted, and still converts the reader who wants the shortcut. The structural side of getting quoted is covered in AI search optimization.
Ask for less than you want
Every extra field reduces completion, and nobody in your sales process reads most of them. Email plus one qualifying field is usually the right trade.
If the qualifying field is doing real work, make it useful for the visitor too: a dropdown that changes what they receive is worth filling in. In Thailand, keep the consent line specific to what you will send, in line with the PDPA guidance published by the Personal Data Protection Committee.
Deliver instantly, follow up like a human
The download should arrive on the screen immediately, not only by email. The email that follows should come from a person, reference what they downloaded, and ask one question rather than opening a sequence of five.
- Instant on-page delivery.
- One human email within a working day.
- One relevant follow-up a week later, then stop.
Measure the right number
Downloads are a vanity metric. Track the share of downloads that become replies, and the share of replies that become qualified conversations. If the first number is healthy and the second is not, the magnet attracts the wrong people, so change the magnet rather than the follow-up.
Fire the submit event only after the request succeeds, and carry the campaign source with it: see GA4 events for lead generation.
Where to go next
The page that hosts the offer matters as much as the offer: landing page conversion checklist. If you need a steady supply of assets to gate, build the content repurposing engine.
